steels for general engineering purposes
free cutting steels
casehardening steels
steels for quenching and tempering
ball and roller bearing steels

Free cutting steels are very popular because of their easy machinability on high-cutting-speed machines.

The main features of free cutting steels are the easily removal of material’s chips when machined, thanks to the presence of Sulphur (S) in percentages that can reach 0.40%, and the content of Lead (Pb) up to 0.35%, that acts as a self-lubricant on material during the machine processing.

Hot rolled material is purchased according to EN ISO 683-3 whereas cold drawn material is sold according to EN 10277: 2018

These kind of steels are divided in three categories:

  • Steels not intended for heat treatment: 11SMnPb37, 11SMnPb30, 11SMn30 and 11SMn37. Upon request, they can be supplied with the addition of elements such as Tellurium (Te), Bismuth (Bi), in order to improve workability on machine tools.
  • Steels for quenching and tempering: 36SMnPb14, 35S20, 44SMn28, 46S20, etc.
  • Case hardening steels: 10S20, 10SPb20, 15SMn13, etc.

Steels for general engineering use are commonly used in different sectors: carpentry, furniture, bolts, hardware, machinery for industrial application, etc.

They are purchased according to the European standard EN 10025-2 (Steels for structural uses) and after drawing they are sold according to EN 10277: 2018 (Steels for general engineering use).

Steel designation is as follows: S235JRC, S355J2C, E335GC, E295GC, C10, C15.

Case hardening steels have a relatively low carbon content, generally no more than 0.2%.

Nickel, Chrome, Molybdenum and Manganese could be included with the purpose of conferring strength and toughness.

These steels are mainly used in the construction of mechanical parts that risk to wear, such as gears, pins, shafts, etc.

A thermochemical treatment characterizes this steel grade, promoting a carbon enrichment of the surface layer and making it particularly hard. A hardening and tempering treatment give the pieces high resistance to surface wear, fatigue and good core toughness.

Hot rolled material is purchased according to EN ISO 683-3 whereas cold drawn material is sold according to EN 10277: 2018

Examples of case hardening steels: C10E, C10R, C15E, C15R, 16MnCr5, 16NiCr4, 17NiCrMo6-4.

The production of the indicated steel grades is on request with minimum quantities to be agreed

Steels for quenching and tempering are divided into: non-alloy steels and alloy steels; they have the best compromise between mechanical strength and toughness. They are mainly used for mechanical components, for which good impact and vibration resistance properties are required (for example, connecting rods, pins, shafts, levers, etc.).

We could say that the percentage of carbon varies between 0.21% and 0.60%.

There are many steel grades available on the market with only carbon content (eg. C45E-R) or with alloy elements in variable percentage (Ni, Cr, Mo, Mn);

Alloy elements have the following functions:

  • Nickel: promotes toughness and hardenability;
  • Chrome: favours hardenability;
  • Molybdenum: works against the development of fragility when tempering;
  • Manganese: improves hardenability;
  • Vanadium: refines the crystalline grain.

These steels are usually tempered in water or oil at about 620 °C.

Examples of non-alloy steels for quenching and tempering: C35E, C35R, C40E, C40R, C45E, C45R

Examples of alloy steels for quenching and tempering: 42CrMo4, 25CrMoS4

Hot rolled material is purchased according to EN ISO 683-3 whereas cold drawn material is sold according to EN 10277: 2018

100Cr6

This steel grade with a high carbon and chrome content achieves high hardness, good resistance to deformation and wear. It is used for the production of balls, needles and bearing rings.

Supply condition:

  • +AC+C = Globular annealed + Cold drawn
  • In order to improve the workability the Sulphur content is controlled (S = 0.020 ÷ 0.030%)

Hot rolled material is purchased and afterwards drawn according to EN ISO 683-17, dimensional tolerances and bar lengths according to EN 10277: 2018

Production only on request with minimum quantities to be agreed
